A business card scanner for networking events
You come home from a mixer with a stack of cards. Scanning them is the easy part. The follow-up is where most people stop, so that is the part worth choosing a scanner for. Here is what to look for, and how AfterShake handles it.
What to look for in a business card scanner
- It fills in the contact and lets you fix it. Name, title, company, email and phone should land in the right boxes, and you should be able to edit every field before you save.
- It keeps where you met and what you talked about. That one line is what turns a template into an email that sounds like you remember them.
- It gets you from card to sent message fast. Ideally before you leave the parking lot, while the conversation is still fresh.
- It sends from your own address. Replies should come to you, not to a system you do not control.
- It lets you take your contacts with you. Look for vCard and CSV export so you are never locked in.
- The price fits how often you go to events. A free plan you can try at your next mixer beats a subscription you have to commit to first.
How AfterShake works at a chamber mixer
Scan the card in the app. AfterShake reads the name, title, company, email and phone and fills in the contact. Add a line of context, like "Met at: Liberty Hill Chamber after-hours mixer. Talked about: missed calls, busy season." AI then drafts a personal follow-up email and a short text version. Open either one in your own email app or Messages, tweak it, and send. Tag the contacts by event, like "Chamber luncheon", so you can find everyone from that night later.
For chamber members, BNI groups, and trade shows
Chamber members: mixers, luncheons and ribbon cuttings produce a lot of cards. Follow up with everyone you met while the conversation is still fresh, not three weeks later.
BNI and referral groups: turn the visitor you just met into a scheduled one-to-one with a note that references their business.
Sales reps and founders: fifty conversations in a day, and every one of them gets a real follow-up, not a mass blast.
What it costs
Free is $0: 5 card scans every month and 3 AI-drafted follow-ups to try. Pro monthly is $6.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, with unlimited scans and follow-ups. Pro lifetime is $46.99 one time, with a 30-day refund. See the full pricing.
How it compares
AfterShake does one job and is not a full CRM or a digital business card. See the honest side-by-sides with NexaLink and Banana, or read about every feature and why I built it.
Questions
Does a business card scanner replace a CRM?
No. A scanner gets the contact into your phone and, with AfterShake, gets the follow-up written. Every contact exports as a vCard, and your whole list exports as a CSV, so you can move them into the contact tool you already use.
What if I scan a lot of cards at a trade show?
The free plan covers 5 card scans a month, which is enough to try it at one event. For a day of fifty conversations, Pro has unlimited scans and unlimited AI-drafted follow-ups. You can also tag a whole night of scans at once, so every contact from the event is grouped.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Download AfterShake from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with Google, Apple or email.
